Relocating to Spain
¡Bienvenidos a España!
On this page we will try to give you some basic understanding on what you need to fix before you start working for us in Spain.
Any specific regulations or good-to-know facts and a bunch of links that hopefully can point you in the right direction.

What to think of
Before your start
A place to stay
Finding a place to live in Barcelona or Madrid is not always easy.
When you are looking for a rental apartment, a good place to look is www.idealista.com
It is common that you need to pay a deposit of 1-2 months and other "hidden costs". Make sure you check carefully if the offer is legit. If it sounds to good to be true, it most likely is...
Before you start
Bureaucracy
"PADRÓN": Got a place to stay? Then you need to register yourself at the Municipality ("Padrón"). On their website you can plan in a meeting for signing up. Make sure you bring all the documentation that is needed.
NIE: "Número Identificación Extranjero" (Foreigner Id Number). Needed for filling taxes.
SS NUMBER: Social security number. You need to get this number before your hiring date. And we as employer also need this number so we can register you into te different public offices.
Sometimes you can get it yourself after getting an appointment. Sometimes you will need our help
Easy to have
Remote working
During your employment
For most jobs, it is possible to work from home occasionally. You need to align this with your manager.
The same goes for working remote. This is possible for most, but with some limitations. There are tax and insurance risks. We have therfore a policy stating what is and is not allowed. Please make yourself aware of this policy, before you plan any remote working. If you want more information on this, please check with your manager.
Taxes
Taxes... not the most fun topic, but important.
We as employer cannot give tax advice to you. But we can highlight to you what is important to think of. We strongly recomend especially the first year to make use of a tax advisor that can help you with your tax return.
Good to know
- The main tax obligation you have is the Income Tax Return “Renta”.
- You submit it between April and June for the previous year.
- The first year in Spain, your taxes will work differently. As you have not worked a full year in the same country.
Your first year in Spain
- It is important to know if the tax office considers you as a tax resident for your first year or not. As this determines the tax rate that needs to be applied. If you are a tax resident or not depends on when during the year you start working in Spain, and if you will stay long term or not. We are oblidged to use a flat tax rate if you only will work in Spain for a short period.
- If you were working a part of the year in your home country, and a part of the year in Spain, you most likely need to fill in your tax return for both countries. Between countries there are often tax treaties that prevent that you pay income tax double. It can be difficult to know what you need to report in each country
After your first year
- your income tax rate is based on your salary in January. If your salary changes during the year, or you receive one time payments, your tax rate will go up.
- Lynk&Co is oblidged to withold the income tax for you and pay it to the tax office. We only take your Lynk&Co salary into consideration. If you have any other income, it will have an effect on the taxes you need to pay in. You can request to apply a higher tax rate to prevent you paying in to little.
